Short Film Market Research (8th Sept - 28th Sept)

SHOTS AND ANGLES

In order to display my understanding of the different shots and angles that are used when shooting, I decided to create a video montage that explained all the different shots and angles that can be used and what the general meaning of each shot/ angle is to the audience. In the video I gave an example of the shot/ angle, visually shown by a character toy, including the name of that shot/ angle and how it is used to inform/ target an audience.

Researching the different camera shots and angles that can be used helped to develop my understanding of how each shot is used and the meanings it can portray to the audience. I will follow on from my research by using it throughout the rest of my research and planning, focusing, firstly, on short film analyses.

ANALYSES

I analysed different short films in order to gain an understanding of how mise-en-scene, camera shots and angles, editing and sound are used in order to portray different messages, emotions and meanings across to the audience. I decided to analyse two different short films as it enabled me to understand how the same shots, or editing can be used but portray two different messages.

From analysing short films, my understanding of how camera, editing and mise-en-scene techniques has developed and has been consolidated. This will help when it comes to my own planning as I will be able to use the same techniques for my short film, only adapting them to ensure the meaning and mood within my short film is clearly portrayed to the audience.

COMPARISON OF TWO SHORT FILMS
After analysing two short films, I decided to compare two short films in order to see the similarities that are used within different short films, as well as what is different. by comparing two short films I have understood how the same camera shot, camera angle/ movement can portray a different meaning depending on how the media language has been used.

Comparing different short films has consolidated my knowledge on how the four different techniques; sound, mise-en-scene, editing and camera shots and angles are used to portray the genre of the short film, as well as the emotions of the characters. From conducting all my analyses of short films I will use the knowledge I have developed in the planning of my own short film. This will ensure that my finished short film is as professional as possible.

HISTORY OF SHORT FILM

In order to understand how short films have developed over the years, I decided to research the history of short films. This included looking at how short films begun, famous short films that begun this style of film making and how it has developed over time. Conducting this research helped to understand why short films are made and what makes them different to normal films (other than the time length).

From this research, understanding why short films are created and what they provide to an audience, compared to feature length films, is much easier. From this research I am going to do more research and break down short films even more in order to understand how the structure of a short film is broken down.

SHORT FILM CONVENTIONS
In order to understand the structure of short films, I decided to research the common conventions of short film. This included understanding what the most common conventions are, why they are used in short films and how it appeals to an audience. Researching the conventions of short film will help understand how to structure a short film when it comes to planning my own short film.

From researching the conventions of short films, I am going to take the knowledge gathered into my short film planning in order to ensure my short film conforms to as many conventions as possible. This will help the audience identify the style of my film (short film) through noticing the conventions that define this particular style. I will also research horror conventions, as this is my chosen genre for my short film, in order to combine the two together.

HORROR CONVENTIONS
Following my research into the conventions of short films, I decided to research and create a montage of the conventions of horror. I researched into horror conventions as this is going to be the chosen genre for my own short film. In my research I focused on looking into the conventional settings of a horror film, the technical aspects including; editing, camera shots and angles, sound and mise-en-scene.

From creating a montage of the conventions of horror, I can conform to or adapt these conventions when using them in my own short film. In order to ensure my target audience are able to recognise some horror conventions, I will make sure that some conventions are conformed too. However from conducting this research and seeing how I could make my short film stand out, I will adapt some conventions to make sure that the audience cannot predict what is going to happen next, leaving the element of surprise still for the audience.

SHORT FILM PRODUCERS AND DISTRIBUTORS
To develop my existing knowledge of short film, I decided to continue researching into short films, however focusing on producers and distributors. I decided to research how short films are produced and distributed in order to know the limitations that occur with short films, but also the expectations that occur from outside the production team.
From researching how short films are produced and distributed I know what is expected if I decided to seek financial help when producing my short film, and also how to distribute my short film without it costing. This also helped to complete my understanding of short films which will help when I begin to plan for my own short films.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Once finishing research about short film, including their history, conventions, producers and distributors, I decided to move on and begin conducting research into my possible target audience's. In order to find my ideal target audience, I have decided to conduct both primary and secondary research. This will help to build my target audience profile and know who I am going to target my short film towards.
Secondary Research

QUESTIONNAIRE
After conducting secondary research I began my primary research. This consisted of two different primary researches; a questionnaire and vox pops. Both these research formats was conducted in order to receive feedback from my intended target audience, which would help influence the content, setting and characters in my short film so that it would appealing. I first created a questionnaire in build an understanding of my audience profile, sorting out the ideal gender and target age for my short film.

VOX POPS
After conducting a questionnaire, which gave anonymous answers, I moved onto conducting vox pops in order to get an understanding of what my particular target audience expect to see in a horror film. I created a vox pop in order to show the different responses from the audience. The questions I had asked the audience were so that I understood what settings, character characteristics and conventions of horror films were most popular within my target audience. I also conducted vox pops in order to show that I have understood what my audience have said in my planning.
