Film Poster Market Research (20th Oct - 9th Nov)

CONVENTIONS
Similar to the research I conducted for my short film, in order to understand how film posters are created I decided to research the conventions of film posters. I did this in order to understand what are the key features that are consistent throughout most film posters. By doing this research I understand what are the key features that create a film poster and how to make my poster appear professional and appealing to my target audience.

COLLAGE
After researching the conventions of film posters, I decided to find examples of film posters from my chosen genre; horror. I decided to do this in order to see which conventions are consistently used throughout all film posters and which ones don't have to be used. This has helped with my understanding of the conventions and will be useful when analysing film posters as I know what should definitely be included and see on a film poster.

ANALYSES
I used the research I had already conducted which was looking at the conventions of film posters and different film posters that correspond to my chosen film genre, to analyse three film posters individually. I analysed individual film posters in order to look at what conventions were used on the poster and how they have been specifically used in order to appeal to that films target audience. Analysing film posters helped to consolidate the research I have already gathered, and will help when moving onto my audience research for my own film poster.

QUESTIONNAIRE
I began my primary research by conducting two different primary researches; a questionnaire and vox pops. Both these research formats was conducted in order to receive feedback from my intended target audience, which would help influence the content, and conventions for my film poster so that it would be appealing. I first created a questionnaire in order build an understanding of what my target audience would be appealed towards on my film poster.

VOX POP
In order to get an understanding of what my particular target audience expect to see on a film poster, I created a vox pop in order to show the different responses from the audience. The questions I had asked the audience were so that I understood what my target audience expect to see on a film poster and know how to make my film poster appealing to my target audience. I also conducted vox pops in order to show that I have understood what my audience have said when it came to my planning.

SIMILAR FILM POSTER
After creating my initial ideas, I decided to look back at one of the posters and analyse the different conventions that it used and how they could be interpreted into my film poster. I done this in order to make sure that my film poster looked as professional as possible. Analysing another film poster but this time focusing on what I could use as inspiration has helped to intertwine my market and audience research to ensure I conform to the common conventions of film poster but still appeal to my target audience.
