Film Review Market Research (1st Dec - 21st Dec)

CONVENTIONS
In order to understand how film reviews are usually constructed, I researched the conventions of film reviews. I done this in order to begin my understanding in what are the main aspects of a film review, focusing on what is commonly used throughout most reviews. I also researched the conventions of film reviews as it would be useful to know when I begin planning my own film review.

COLLAGE
After researching the conventions of film reviews, I decided to find examples of film reviews. I decided to do this in order to see which conventions are consistently used throughout all film reviews and which ones are not consistently used. This has helped with my understanding of the conventions and will be useful when analysing film reviews as I know what should definitely be included and see on a film review.

ANALYSES
After researching the conventions of magazine film reviews and using it to create a collage of different film reviews and point out the most used conventions. After creating a collage of different magazine reviews, I analysed three different film reviews. I focused on the what conventions had been used within the review and how it appeals to both the films target audience but also the magazines target audience.

VOX POP
In order to get an understanding of what my particular target audience expect to see on magazine film reviews, I created a vox pop in order to show the different responses from the audience. The questions I had asked the audience were so that I understood what my target audience expect to see in a film review and know how to make my film review appealing to my target audience. I also conducted vox pops in order to show that I have understood what my audience have said when it came to my planning.

SIMILAR MAGAZINE FILM REVIEW
After creating my initial ideas, I decided to look back at one of the film reviews in my collage and analyse the different conventions that is used and how they have been adapted to appeal to their target audience. I looked at this in order to understand how I could do the same for my own film review. Analysing another film review, this time focusing on what I could use as inspiration, has helped to intertwine my market and audience research to ensure I conform to the common conventions of film reviews but still appeal to my target audience.

QUESTIONNAIRE
I continued my primary research by conducting a questionnaire. I created a questionnaire in order to build an understanding of what my target audience would be appealed towards. In my magazine film review questionnaire I asked my audience there initial interest in film reviews and how much of an influence it can have to watch a film. This was because the answers to these questions will help to understand what conventions would appeal to my target audience.
As my film review is structured to conform to the conventions of reviews in magazines, I decided to research what magazines may be a good distribution choice for my film review. I looked at different magazines, focusing on the positive and negative aspects of the institution and their product in order to evaluate whether the magazine would benefit the promotion of my short film and target the right audience for my film review. Completing this research has helped to understand the different structure film reviews have depending on the magazine they are distributed through, which will help me when I begin to plan my initial magazine film review ideas in my planning stage.
